JOHANNESBURG, 13 July 2016 – The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) has today reiterated its view that the metals and engineering sector remains in a critical condition, with job losses forecast to continue despite pockets of production improvements in some sub-industries.

At the Second Southern African Metals and Engineering Indaba in May, the Minister of Small Business Development, Lindiwe Zulu, recognised the metals and engineering sector as a key potential contributor to the 11 million jobs that her Ministry was tasked to create by 2030, in accordance with the National Development Plan.

Former President calling for sector growth at metals and engineering indaba

Former President Kgalema Motlanthe encouraged metals and engineering industries executives, government leaders and other stakeholders at the Southern African Metals and Engineering Indaba to collaborate to drive growth in the sector. The two-day conference was held in Sandton, Johannesburg on 26 and 27 May 2016.
