There has been a very substantial increase in applications from employers in the five chambers of the Merseta for discretionary grants in terms of the third funding window that was open for the period 1 April to 31 May 2010.

15 Setas to continue and 6 new Setas to be formed

Higher Education and Training Minister Dr Blade Nzimande has announced the proposed new-look Seta landscape. 15 of the current Setas are to be recertified from April 2011 with only minor changes - and six new Setas are to be formed.

MERSETA RETRENCHMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME (RAP)

Project aim

To retrain workers who are retrenched or are in the process of being retrenched as a result of the industry downturn or workplace closure. The training will help retrenched workers upgrade their skills or develop new skills so that they can re-enter the labour market as quickly as possible or embrace entrepreneurship. Re-employment or self-employment of the retrenched worker remains the ultimate objective of the project.

THE MERSETA VOUCHER IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT (VIP) BACK ON TRACK

The Merseta VIP aimed at boosting training by providing funded training for employees of small and medium enterprises is back on track after a temporary suspension in November last year to allow for a system clean-up.

An external evaluation of the project has also been approved by the Governing Board to review the project and formulation recommendations on design improvements for the next phase of the project which commences on 1 April.

Amendment - Merseta Funded Toolboxes for SMEs

The Merseta has noted an error in their circular which was distributed regarding the launch of the toolbox project.  Only companies with fewer than 50 employees are eligible to make application for this funding (not companies with fewer than 150 employees).

Please note important information below for all merSETA  ELIGIBLE clients :  Small & Medium companies i.e. paying SDL for a maximum of 49 employees per Levy number. No Large companies.
 
The toolbox PILOT project was launched on 01 September 2009 as scheduled. The aim of the project is to assist the learners and appies at our SMME companies to gain hands on experience sooner rather than later, and improve their success rate. A total of 1, 500 toolboxes on all our designated trades will be made available on application.

MERSETA SCARCE AND CRITICAL SKILLS LIST FOR 2009/2010 HAS BEEN FINALISED

In terms of the current process of updating the Sector Skills Plan (SSP) the Merseta has finalised the scarce and critical skills list (in rank order) for the Metal Chamber for the next twelve month period.
